Mont Blanc Tunnel (Tunnel du Mont-Blanc)
- Winter rules
- Chains on board (not necessarily fitted) or snow tyres compulsory on the Italian side outside the tunnel from 15 October to 15 April; inside the tunnel minimum speed 50 km/h, maximum 70 km/h, minimum 150 m following distance. ✓ checked · tunnelmb.net · tunnelmb.net
- Notes
- The tunnel links Chamonix to Courmayeur (Italy) and is 11.6 km long, run by ATMB (France) and SITMB (Italy) under a joint operating agreement. ✓ checked · en.wikipedia.org
A40 Autoroute Blanche / RN205 Route Blanche
- Winter rules
- Under France's 'Loi Montagne 2', all vehicles (including motorhomes) must carry four winter tyres or snow chains/socks from 1 November to 31 March across all of Haute-Savoie department, with fines for non-compliance; ATMB also reduces the motorway speed limit to 110 km/h from 1 November to 31 March. ✓ checked · alps2alps.com
- Notes
- The A40 is toll motorway from Mâcon/Geneva as far as Passy, continuing as the RN205 Route Blanche to Chamonix and the tunnel; ATMB manages the eastern (Chamonix-side) section and publishes live closures and works. ✓ checked · alps2alps.com
Col des Montets
- Winter rules
- The D1506 over the col is generally open in winter but is frequently closed during periods of high avalanche risk; when closed, cars are shuttled through the old rail tunnel des Montets between Argentière/Vallorcine on a convoy basis alternating with trains. ✓ checked · en.wikipedia.org · en.wikipedia.org
- Notes
- Closures have happened in recent winters during high avalanche danger, e.g. a 5/5 avalanche-risk day in February 2026 when the col was shut from the previous evening. ✓ checked · radiomontblanc.fr
